As a life coach who guides people to set goals and achieve them, I first work with my clients to think about, and then focus on, a desired outcome.
This is a process that generates results. Every time. However, some are not so convinced.
Case in point: A good friend of mine, a sales rep for a large company, was telling me that a client of his was asking way too much from him – at least he saw it that way. This client was expecting a list of strategies, and contacts, and sales goals that my friend had to provide. While I was chatting with my sales rep friend it became very apparent that this wasn’t his regular style of working. He actually had quite an aversion to it. I asked him if he’d be willing to try this new sales approach if his desire to work with this client was strong enough.
His answer… Goals don’t work, nobody ever looks at the goals they make, they’re stupid!

She’s a young writer, and one of her high level goals is to write for the New York Times. It’s a lofty goal, and not an easy thing to achieve, especially being Canadian. So when her boyfriend was in New York for work, she asked him to bring her home a copy of the newspaper so she could display it in her house and have it act as a symbol to help her make her dream come true.

At the beginning of March, I joined two of my friends in a month-long exercise challenge where we had to commit to doing some sort of exercise every single day. It was a very interesting month. I had two business trips – one to San Diego and the other to Japan (which included two 24-hour travel days). I also had to deal with a snow day at the beginning of the month… so my daughter was home from school on a day that I didn’t plan for. One of my friends I was doing the challenge with got incredibly sick and was hosting a number of events around the same time. Despite these seemingly very good excuses not to follow through, we all still managed to complete our challenge!

In the lead up to the wrap up of my 8-week Optimal Health and Conscious Living course, I ran a group coaching session with my coach, Amy K. Yes, coaches have coaches, and both my husband and I work with Amy, who specializes in taking people to their full potential. In fact, she really helped us realize our dream of moving to New York City.
The goal of this particular session was to bring all of the women enrolled in my program together to look at their desired outcomes. These goals were set at the beginning of the course and, after taking in weeks of content dealing with everything from food sensitivities to adrenal health to sexual health to meditation and mindfulness, it was time to look at how could they best incorporate all this valuable information into their everyday lives.
